play
Friday, February 17 was designated ‘Day of Play’ at Geneseo Elementary. Elementary students had the opportunity to participate in some unstructured playtime throughout the day. This means the students were able to lead the play without direction from teachers, and had the chance to be creative, explore, and play games.
Students opted to go outside, play board games, build with blocks, and work on puzzles indoors. There was also opportunities for artistic creations and musical creations. The building was filled with problem-solving, collaboration, and so much laughter.

Not only does this type of play encourage creativity and self-reliance, but it also supports the social-emotional learning competencies of building relationship skills and social awareness.
We encourage this type of play at home, too.

A bonus: we used this as an opportunity to unplug and not have the play be associated with electronics! Bravo to the GES staff for their flexibility and dedication to student opportunities.
