A new resource is now available at Geneseo Central School to help students meet their basic needs—the Giving Closet is officially open!
Thanks to the dedication of intern Emma Janson, a Master of Social Work student at Roberts Wesleyan College, and the support of GCS Social Worker Mrs. Hathaway, the Giving Closet has become a reality! The duo has worked tirelessly to create a welcoming and supportive space where students can access essential items like clothing, shoes, and personal care products—completely free of charge.
The closet is located in the MS/HS nurse’s office, offering students a discreet and familiar location that helps reduce stigma. Whether it’s a pair of sneakers, a hoodie, or some basic hygiene supplies, students can stop by during school hours without needing an appointment. The space is open to all students, regardless of their circumstances. Currently, the closet is geared toward middle and high school students.
Looking ahead to the 2025–2026 school year, the Giving Closet team hopes to open the program up to community donations. Families are encouraged to donate new or gently used items—like that “Go Blue” sweatshirt your student has outgrown or extra cleats from soccer season. The Do Gooders Club will assist in collecting, sorting, and organizing the donations. Please note: donations will not be accepted until the start of the next school year—but when the time comes, even the smallest contribution can help make a big difference in a student’s life!
When students' basic needs are met, they're better able to focus, engage, and succeed in the classroom. “The Giving Closet is more than a space,” says Mrs. Hathaway, “it’s a symbol of our community’s care, where every student can find support, dignity, and the essentials they need to thrive.”
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Geneseo Educational Foundation for funding the startup of this project, as well as to the local stores who generously donated items. Your support is helping build a stronger, more caring school community—one student at a time.
