The Geneseo Central School District community will have the opportunity to vote January 30 on a proposed project of just over $28.3 million, “Safe Campus: Enhancing Security and Enriching Student Life Capital Improvement Project.”

The project aims to address immediate infrastructure concerns and other improvements to district facilities, while also expanding educational opportunities for students. The district will hold a public hearing on the proposed project at 6 p.m. January 22 in the middle/high school media center.

The proposal was developed with staff and community input at public meetings and aligns with the district’s strategic plan, specifically in the areas of enhancing school safety and security and providing high-quality facilities in which students learn and staff teach. The district is proposing this capital project now because of the structural deficiencies in the large gym, which will cause the district to close the space if it is not repaired.  “Our district grows every year and our schools are continuously ranked as one of the top in New York state,” Superintendent Cindy Flowers said. “The rankings are mostly based on state test performance, graduation and college preparation. Our goal every school year is for our students to succeed during and after school and it is our responsibility to give them the necessary tools to excel.”

The proposed tax levy increase would fall between 7.32% and 7.87% depending upon financing of the debt. A levy in that range would carry approximately $1.00 per $1,000 of assessed home value, meaning a $100,000 home would have an increase of $100 annually, a $200,000 home would have an increase of $200 annually and a $300,000 home would have an increase of $300 annually.

In addition to the tax levy, the district is proposing to pay for the project using $172,606 from its Capital Reserve Fund. The rest of the project would be paid by using roughly $20.24 million in state Building Aid, which would cover potentially 71.30% of the total cost.

More details about the proposed project are available on the capital improvement
project section of the district website, www.geneseocsd.org.
