GCS 2023

Geneseo Middle/ High School continues to rank high among New York schools, according to new 2023-24 rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News released its annual Best High Schools Rankings on Aug. 29. About 18,000 public high schools are ranked and the list features a mix of charter, magnet and traditional public schools.

Geneseo Middle/High School is ranked sixth out of 72 schools included in the Rochester, NY Metro Area. GCS also placed first in Livingston county, 110th overall within New York state and 1,037 nationally.

“I’m so proud of the community, students, parents and staff for being recognized as one of the best high schools in the nation and at the very top in all the Greater Rochester Region,” Middle and High School Principal Michael Salatel said. “All the support from our community stakeholders allows our school to offer enriching and quality learning experiences to students."

The publication scores institutions based on performance on state-required tests, graduation and college preparation. The Middle/High School scored 96% on mathematics proficiency, 88% reading proficiency and 89% science proficiency. About 62% of students also took at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam and 50% passed at least one AP exam.

U.S. News lists that Geneseo graduates 96% of its seniors, which is above the state median. The publication gave the school an overall score of 94%.

"The outstanding results are directly correlated to staff having a thorough understanding of curriculum, NYS learning standards, social and emotional needs of students and tremendous dedication to our school. I deeply appreciate and value the high-quality work that helped us earn this distinguished recognition.” Salatel said.

U.S. News & World Report notes that it adjusted its normal calculations to account for the cancellation of state tests in spring 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the data was not available in that 2019-2020 time frame, the publication used results from the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 school years.

"This momentous accomplishment is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our students, educators and the entire school community, " Superintendent Cindy Flowers said.  “As we celebrate this milestone, let it inspire us to continue fostering a nurturing environment of learning, growth and achievement for all. Together, we have proven that greatness is attainable through collective effort and the future holds limitless possibilities for Geneseo students."
