Career day 2023

GCS middle school students got a head start on exploring their future careers.

On Nov. 21, students in grades 5-8 participated in a career day. The event, coordinated by counselors Theresa Holt and Beki Kaye, featured about a dozen local and regional business owners and GCS teachers.

Students attended numerous sessions throughout the day to explore several different careers like  law enforcement, technology, communications, aviation and cosmetology.

“Career day is important because we want kids to explore the world of work,” Holt said. “I tell students it’s not just about picking a career, it’s also about understanding the skills needed for different jobs. We try to make the skills transferable and relatable to what they are doing in school. Our kids take it seriously and they are really well behaved.”

Career day has been part of the school’s curriculum for about 20 years. It’s an important part of the district’s commitment toward supporting student transitions and their success not only in school, but after graduation.

Holt said many of the business owners shared positive feedback from engaging with the students.

The event directly aligns the first goal of the district’s strategic plan of ensuring all students, including those with diverse learning needs, are prepared for college and/or careers.
